About the History of Phnom Penh

The city itself has been in existence for over 650 years. With over 260 square miles of area, and a population that exceeds 1.5 million people, this is a land that is full of cultural diversity as well as a history that challenges that of virtually any other owner.

Phnom Penh became the capital of Cambodia in 1865, a short time after the French began their occupation of the country as one of their protectorates. Cambodia has seen a large number of neighboring nations as well as imperial powers dominate its history, and the French did so for nearly 90 years before independence was declared in 1954.

For the next 40 years the city has seen some turbulent times, as has the entire nation. For about 20 years Cambodia found itself sucked into the Vietnam conflict. This eventually led to the Khmer Rouge seizing power and beginning of very dark. In the nation’s history. Millions of the country citizens fell at the hands of the dictator Pol Pot and, sadly, there are still remnants of this terrible period in and around the city today.

The Killing Fields, which bond a movie by the same name, is located near the city itself. A historic museum, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), marks the horrific events of this time, and pays tribute to those who lost their lives during this time.

About the Climate and Geography of Phnom Penh

Located near the equator makes this a very tropical like climate. Most of the city itself sits on the banks of three different rivers, which provide fresh water and other natural resources to the capital city. Phnom Penh is located on a floodplain, and during monsoon season there is a tendency for rivers to overflow their banks and flood portions of the city. Travelers should be aware that coming to the capital during the monsoon season can bring its challenges with it.

The city is a beautiful array of both present time and past. Much of the areas still used for agriculture, while there are large industrial complexes and factories. The roads have been modernized over the last two decades to provide easier access around the city, and you will find that the trails that are available make walking and easy proposition.

For most of the year this is a very hot place to visit. A typical temperature range during the year is between 72°F and 95°F. Monsoons come out of the southwest providing strong winds and heavy rains from about May to October each year. These weather patterns are fostered by the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand in the Indian Ocean. The end summons the dry season, which is a period where it still rains, but without the catastrophic weather patterns.

Getting to Phnom Penh

There are a large number of airlines that provide access to the city. The Phnom Penh International Airport is just 4 miles west of the city itself. There are restaurants, banks, duty shops, and other stores within the airport terminal itself, and visas can be obtained at the airport as well.

Getting from the airport to your hotel or resort is quite easy. Most hotels offer shuttles the transport between the airport and their complex, but you can rent a taxi for about $12 to take you wherever you need to get. The busing system is also quite elaborate, making it easy to get to any destination within the city.
