The coastline is about 37 kilometers in length, a little more than half of that of Koh Rong. Koh Rong Samloem is located off the cost of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and is about four kilometers from her sister island. It is located about 25 kilometers from the nearest port on Sihanoukville. The island is very similar to Koh Rong in appearance. Much of the coast is the beach area, while the inner portion is covered by a dense rainforest area. Most of the terrain of the island is hilly with the largest mountain being La Chameau, which is about 200 yards above sea level. The beaches to the island are primarily yellow sand, as sandstone rocks are the primary feature along the coastline other than beaches. The east side of the island faces the mainland, so it does not take the effects of weather as the western face does. In fact, the west end of the island is much more susceptible to weather patterns like monsoons. On the east side of the island is Saracean Beach Bay, which is one of the more popular attractions for people to visit. This is a very peaceful water area and is popular with those who wish to swim or who are looking learn how to scuba dive…….

KOH RONG SAMLOEM
Cambodia is quickly becoming an area that many tourists are traveling to each year. Since becoming a tourist destination about a decade ago, the once troubled nation is showing that its country is not only a stable one for people to visit, but one that many find a perfect paradise in Southeast Asia.
The primary destination place that many opt to visit is Ream National Park. This is a nature preserve that Cambodia has designated to protect a large number of endangered and threatened species of plants and animals. In fact, the largest number of plants, animals, and insects in the world are contained in this area, making it one of the most unique places on earth to visit.
Within the wildlife preserve are 23 islands, with a few being opened to tourists to stay in the bungalows that line the beach areas of the island. This includes Koh Rong Samloem Island, which is one of the most spectacular places on earth to visit. On the island there are two primary villages where a majority of the 300 inhabitants of Koh Rong Samloem Island live. The first of this, MapPay Bay, is in the north, while Koh Rong Samloem Phumi Kang Khnong is in the south. The southern village is a big fishing village, as most of the inhabitants are responsible for the fresh fish that is served to guests on the island daily, as well as to some of the other tourist locations around Koh Rong Samloem.
There is one other village on the island, Phumi Kang Krau, but it is not densely populated at all. At last count there were just a couple of dozen people who lived here. Most who live in the village are involved in fishing, but primarily for their own needs.
On the island there is a set of roads that connect the various beaches, villages and other key places on Koh Rong Samloem. These were built in the 1950s when the island was under the rule of the French government. They were not maintained for many years, and heavy vegetation has taken over large portions of the roadways. This is not a set of roads meant for car travel, however, they are perfect for bicycles and for those who want to simply go for a walk and see more of the island.
One of the key features of the island that remains from French rule is the lighthouse that is on the southern most tip of Koh Rong Samloem. The lighthouse is still in operation, and during certain times of the year you can still see the landing strips that were used by the French to land small aircraft. Planes are not able to use this land strip and have not been able to do so for decades.
Most of the transport to and around the island is done by boat. Because the roads are not really workable for cars or trucks boats has become the best option for tourists, villagers, and employees to get around. Some transport is done by water buffalo carts, which haul much of the goods from the shore to the interior of the island and vice versa.
The Cambodian Navy has a small base on the island. In fact, the island is administered by the Navy for the most part.
The island uses its own source of solar power to provide electricity to the villages, the naval base, and to bungalows for tourists. The electricity is turned off at 11 each night to conserve power, and is turned back on at 5 am. Those who wish to wake up early, but are concerned because they cannot use an alarm clock can contact the front desk of their resort and get a wakeup call as needed. There is no internet Wi-Fi or cable connection provided on the island.
How to Get to Koh Rong Samloem Island
To get to the island you would have to first come to the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. You are then taken by shuttle to Sihanoukville where you would catch a ferry to the island. The ferry takes about forty-five minutes to travel the distance to Koh Rong Samloem Island and costs $10. For many this cost would be established as part of your trip, but for those who are staying on the mainland but would like to see the island, the round-trip cost is $20.
There are two daily trips to the island, but there are also fast ferries that will take you there much more quickly, plus they go to the island more frequently. This is usually done as part of a tour or as an event, but these boats will make trips to accommodate late arriving passengers or for other reasons. The cost varies for these fast ferries.
There are also later trips that are taken just before night. These are for those who are going for overnight stays.
Two other options to get to the island are as part of a day trip or cruise event. There is a party boat that travels to the island each day, leaves the passengers there for the day and then returns later in the evening. The Sun Tours also offers a trip to the island, as well as to many of the other islands and sites in Ream National Park. Both options provide lunch, a bar on board and on the shore, and activities for participants, including snorkeling.
What to Do on Koh Rong Samloem Island
The biggest attraction to the island is the lighthouse, which is still in operation, but tourists are allowed to see the view from the tower. It is truly spectacular, and you can literally see for miles, making this one of the most beautiful views a person will see. Often pods of dolphins will travel near the island, making the view even more spectacular.
Of course the natural beauty of the island offers a host of activities that will help to keep you occupied all day. As mentioned before, Ream National Park is the home to the most endangered and threatened plants, animals, and insects on earth. Many of these plants and creatures are contained in the dense forest area of Koh Rong Samloem Island.
One of the things that makes this island different from her sister island, is that Koh Rong had a great deal of illegal logging that occurred before the government put a stop to that. This has meant that Koh Rong Samloem has a much more dense and healthy forest area.
You will love the amazing wildlife, you will find here. You can enjoy this all on your own by simply taking a walk through on the trails that lead through the jungle, or you can join a tour to see the area. Tours are quite extensive and take about four hours to complete. You will see a great deal and get some great pictures if you are a camera bug.
The waterfalls and groves on the island are truly spectacular. You will love the view as you walk through the forest, getting a real glimpse of how nature was intended to look without man’s intervention. Just open land at its most beautiful look.
The trials allow you the opportunity to take a long walk or you can rent a bicycle and tour the island with a little more speed. You can also be taken in a buffalo cart, but you should be aware that the ride is not the most comfortable.
Beaches and Water
Of course, one of the things that attract people to Ream National Park is the incredible beaches and Koh Rong Samloem has some of the more beautiful ones. There are kilometers of beautiful space to lay out and get a tan, or join in on the activities that are provided near the resorts. There are places where you can get away and be one of just a few people that within hundreds of yards of each other, or you can join with other tourist and the indigenous people and participate in other activities.
For those who want to get into the water, the swimming is amazing, especially at Saracean Beach Bay. Here you will find some very peaceful waters to swim in, making it a better location for families. If you want to get into waters that are a bit rougher, than the west side of the island is perfect for you.
One area that Koh Rong Samloem excels over most places you will visit is in the incredible scuba diving that is available. In fact, Koh Rong Samloem is often referred to as the cradle of Cambodian diving. No matter where people are staying within the nature preserve, most of the diving companies that provide tours take guests to this island to dive. The life to see in the waters around the island are truly spectacular and you will be amazed at the diversity. There will be many plants and animals that you will not find anywhere else on earth, and you will have stories to tell your friends and families that will keep them on the edge of their seats for hours.
You can also find great opportunities to fish. You can simply fish along the shore or you can go out into the deeper waters to try your hand at catching the big one. There are tours you can join, you can simply rent your own boat for the day.
Where to Stay
There are several places you can stay on the island that offer first rate accommodations to visitors. Most of them are bungalows, that are private, have private bathrooms and a queen or twin sized beds. These include the Sunset Bungalows, Lazy Beach, Freedom Island Bungalows, Robinson Bungalows, and M’PayBay. The Chill Inn offers dormitory rooms with a shared bathroom, and the EcoSea Dive has bungalows, but they are much more primitive. Costs range from $10 to $50 per night depending upon amenities and location.
You should be aware that many of the resorts offer other perks as part of staying with them or as part of their establishment. The Chill Inn has a great club, the Breezy Beach Bar that is quite popular with tourists. Freedom Island Bungalows also have a pool that is fed by a natural waterfall. Sunset Bungalows offer scuba diving lessons and tours, as well as kayaks. The City Resort has an incredible Italian Restaurant a few steps away from the bungalows.
It does not matter whether you are looking for a place for yourself or you need accommodations for your whole family, you will find a first rate place to stay that the whole family will love.
